The two diluents most discussed are bacteriostatic water for injection (sterile water with about 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative) and sterile water for injection (no preservative). Both are pharmacy items; the benzyl alcohol is what allows a bacteriostatic vial to tolerate repeated needle entry over a period of time.
How it works
Benzyl alcohol suppresses the growth of common microorganisms, so a multi-use vial reconstituted with bacteriostatic water has a meaningfully longer in-use window than one mixed with preservative-free water. Some compounds, or use in populations sensitive to benzyl alcohol, call for preservative-free sterile water instead, accepting a shorter single-use window.
