Lyophilized (freeze-dried) compounds are shipped dry because they are far more stable that way. Before the material can be measured or used in any setting it must be reconstituted: a precise volume of sterile diluent is added to the vial to bring the powder into solution at a known concentration.
How it works
The diluent is drawn into a syringe, the vial top is swabbed with alcohol, and the liquid is added slowly down the inner glass wall — not directly onto the powder pellet. The vial is then swirled or rolled gently, never shaken, until fully clear. Volume in, plus the known amount of powder, defines the final concentration that drives every later measurement.
What the evidence shows
Pharmacy and compounding references converge on the same handling principles: aseptic technique, gentle mixing to avoid shear and foaming, visual inspection for full dissolution and particulates, and accurate volume measurement.
